Rutgers University requires that all students obtain an official Rutgers account known as a NetID. This is an account on one of the main systems at Rutgers and provides email, file storage, and web space. In addition to these services, a NetID is important as it is required to gain access to a large number of important computing and academic related resources. For example, these accounts are needed to access Blackboard, computing labs, dial up services, and to check your grades online.
Rutgers community members can create accounts for themselves using an online account creation form. Please be aware that there is generally a lag time between the time you register for your first courses at RBS and the time you can create a NETID. Normally this period of time is only a few days, but it can be as much as two weeks.
Once an account is created you can obtain email by directly using that account, or you can opt to forward email sent to that account to an address you regularly use. After you get an account you should also ensure that you are on the appropriate mailing lists at Rutgers.
Obtain a Rutgers University Email Account
You can use the following links to create your account online. Please be aware that there is generally a lag time between the time you register for your first courses at RBS and the time you can create a NETID. Accessing Your Account
Webmail is the easiest way to access your new account. Webmail allows you to check your email from any system that is connected to the Internet.

Email Clients also allow you to access your Rutgers email. There are a number of these available and examples of these programs include MS Outlook, MS Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, and Thunderbird. Please note that if you setup such a program for use outside of Rutgers, you may have to setup the account so that the outgoing mail server is set for a system provided by your ISP. Otherwise you may not be able to send email from your home to anyone outside of Rutgers. For more information consult the instructional documentation, your ISP, or RBS Computing Services. File Storage is also offered through your account. You can access your account and upload or download files using SSH (secure shell).
Web Space is also available on your pegasus or eden accounts. Once you access your account using SSH, you should check to see if there is a folder called public_html. This folder is your web folder and anything you place in this folder will be accessible through your browser. If you do not see this folder on your account, you can create it. If you do create the folder please note that the permissions for the folder should be set to 755. Once you have a file in your public_html folder, you can access that file by going to system.rutgers.edu/~username/filename, where system would be either pegasus or eden.
Forward Your Email
Many students prefer to use their own personal email accounts. You can easily forward your Pegasus or Eden email messages to your personal account.
