Internships & Co-Ops

The RBS Internship and Co-Op program for credit is open to RBS undergraduate students on the New Brunswick campus. The internship and Co-Op course is for general academic credit during the Fall, Spring, and Summer Sessions. Eligible internship and co-op positions can be either paid or unpaid.

PLEASE NOTE: Each internship or co-op for which you are seeking to get credit MUST be with a different employer and in a different semester. You are eligible to get up to 9 credits through this program (for up to 3 separate internships OR 1 internship and 1 co-op).

Before applying for an RBS Internship or Co-Op for credit

  1. Students need to have either completed at least 60 credits toward their degree OR declared their major with junior status. They also need to have completed at least 1 semester at Rutgers with an overall GPA of 2.75 or higher prior to the start of the internship or co-op. (Please note: The Supply Chain Department does not require a minimum GPA. The Marketing Department requires a minimum GPA of 3.0 if student is pursuing marketing credit for an internship or co-op)
  2. Students need to have the intro course of the related internship or Co-Op completed (and passed with a grade of at least a “C”) before they can be registered for the credits related to that internship or Co-Op. See below for the courses that need to be completed in order to be eligible for the relevant internship or Co-Op credit: 
    • Accounting Internship or Co-Op
      Intro to Financial Accounting (33:010:272)
    • BAIT Internship or Co-Op (any 1 of these 3 classes):
      Statistical Methods in Business (33:136:385), Management Information Systems (33:136:370), Operations Management (33:136:386)
    • Finance Internship or Co-Op:  
      Intro to Financial Management (33:390:300) or Financial Management for Finance Majors (33:390:310)
    • Management Internship or Co-Op
      Intro to Management (33:620:301)
    • Marketing Internship or Co-Op
      Intro to Marketing (33:630:301)
    • Supply Chain Management Internship or Co-Op
      Intro to SCM (33:799:301)
  3. To pursue an RBS Internship or Co-Op, full-time status is required. For graduating seniors in their last semester, part-time status is acceptable.

What is an Internship?

An internship is an opportunity to gain real world experience, for those looking to explore or gain the relevant knowledge and skills required to enter into a particular career field.  An internship is shorter in duration.

What is a Co-Op?

Co-Op or Cooperative Education is a structured method of integrating classroom learning with practical work experience related to your career goals.  A Co-Op is longer in duration.

What are the requirements?

Internships Guidelines

  • Completion of at least 12 Rutgers credits prior to starting an internship
  • Completion of the introductory level course in your major with a grade of “C’ or higher
  • GPA: 2.75 or higher
  • At least 15 hours per week and a total of at least 180 hours over the internship period
  • Minimum duration of at least 8 continuous weeks
  • Three (3) general NON-RBS elective credits will be awarded. These credits may not be used to meet RBS major or Business core requirements unless you received prior approval from your major department
  • Students can only register for an internship during the semester that he or she will be working. That is, a student who registers in the fall must work in the fall; register in the spring and work in the spring; and register in the summer and work in the summer
  • Students who are gainfully employed either on a full or part time basis may not consider their employment for either an internship or co-op position

Co-Op Guidelines

  • Completion of at least 12 Rutgers credits prior to starting a co-op positon
  • GPA: 2.75 or higher
  • Minimum of 30 hours per week and at least 510 total hours over the co-op period
  • Minimum duration of at least 17 continuous weeks
  • Six (6) general NON-RBS elective credits will be awarded. These credits may not be used to meet RBS major or Business core requirements unless you received prior approval from your major department
  • Students who are gainfully employed either on a full or part time basis may not consider their employment for either an internship or co-op position

How can I apply?

Complete a Student Learning Contract (SLC) before the appropriate deadline (see the deadline due dates below).  

  • The student and employer must BOTH complete and sign their respective sections.

    IMPORTANT:
    • IF you are a Supply Chain Management student pursuing a SCM internship or co-op, please submit your paperwork to Professor Dan Klepacki at klepacki@business.rutgers.edu.
    • IF you are a Marketing student pursuing a Marketing based internship or co-op please submit your paperwork to Professor Alexandra Kunish at alexandra.kunish@business.rutgers.edu
  • Once approved by the RBS Undergraduate Office, a special permission number will be granted for class registration. Please note that if your internship is during the summer, you will need to register for the course separately through Summer Session. What are the deadlines to apply?

The Student Learning Contract (SLC) must be completed and submitted to Florence Herman (for SCM to Professor Dan Klepacki | for Marketing to Professor Alexandra Kunish) via e-mail by 4:00pm on the internship and Co-Op deadline dates below.

  • SPRING 2020: Friday, January 24th
  • SUMMER 2020: Thursday, June 4th
  • FALL 2020: Friday, September 4th

Do I have to earn credit for my internship or Co-op?

No, earning academic credit is optional. However, some companies/organizations may require students to earn academic credit for participation in their internship or co-op.

Is there a limit on the number of total credits one is allowed to get for multiple internships or co-ops?

Students are eligible to pursue up to 9 general elective credits for internships and co-ops approved by RBS-New Brunswick. Please note that students are only able to get credit once with the same employer in the same position.

How do I pay for the course?

You pay for the course as you would with any other academic course. If you are a full-time student, the course is covered under full-time tuition.

However, in the summer, you must pay for the course separately through Summer Session. Please visit the Rutgers Summer Session website for current tuition and fees.

What are the class assignments?

Monthly and final reports (each a maximum of 2 pages in length) are required. Specific instructions will be provided on Black Board.

I am an international student, am I eligible to apply for an internship or Co-Op?

International students must receive additional employment authorization from Rutgers Global-International Student and Scholar Services before beginning any paid or unpaid internship/co-op.
