Management and Global Business Fall 2023 Seminar Series: Tae Wan Kim
The less tangled web: Why AI chatbots should practice deceit less than humans.
Presenter: Tae Wan Kim, Associate Professor of Business Ethics, Tepper School of Business, Carnegie Mellon University
Abstract:
This article delves into the ethics surrounding conversational/generative AI. Initially, we examine why and under what circumstances it is prima facie permissible for AI to lie to humans in commercial contexts. We then conduct two behavioral studies to investigate how individuals might hold distinct communicative expectations concerning the tendency to deceive for human versus AI negotiators. These expectations subsequently help to identify the circumstances under which it is acceptable for AI versus humans to make untruthful assertions, and differing expectations imply that there may be certain scenarios where humans are allowed to lie but where AI is not.
