Preventing Cheating in Online Testing

There are no means to completely eliminate the possibility of students cheating in online testing. The following are some tools that will help to minimize what students are able to do while taking a test within one of the LMS’s.

Options

Option 1:

Testing within Blackboard

Key Features:

  • Utilizing just the LMS to conduct testing
  • Ability to have timed exams

Option 2:

Respondus LockDown Browser

Key Features:

  • Assessments are displayed full-screen and prevents access to other applications
  • Copying and pasting anything to or from the assessment is prevented
  • Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts and task switching are disabled
  • An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading
  • Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers

Option 3:

Respondus Monitor

Key Features:

  • Respondus Monitor® builds upon the power of LockDown Browser, using a student’s webcam and industry-leading video analytics to prevent cheating during non-proctored exams.
  • After a quick one-time installation, Respondus Monitor will auto-launch from the student's browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE) whenever the exam settings require it. Students are then guided through a pre-exam sequence, including a webcam check.
