New Brunswick Students
This program is for Rutgers Business School-New Brunswick undergraduate students who meet the following criteria prior to the start of the internship/co-op:
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS PROGRAM-WIDE FOR ALL MAJORS:
- Students need to have completed the intro course of the related Internship or Co-op (and passed with a grade of at least a “C”) before they can be registered for the credits related to that internship or Co-op:
- In addition, transfer students need to have completed at least 12 credits at Rutgers.
- Students must be full-time RBS Undergraduate New Brunswick students (≥12 credits/semester); graduating seniors may be part-time
- Retroactive credit is not allowed
- A different internship/employer is required for each credit-bearing experience
- Students who are gainfully employed either on a full or part-time basis may NOT consider their employment for either an internship or a Co-op program.
- A student may earn up to 9 credits total via:
- 3 separate internships OR
- 1 internship and 1 co-op
RBS Internship for Credit Program (3 Credits)
- Internship Requirement:
- Minimum of 15–20 hours/week with a total of at least 180 hours
- Duration: Minimum of 8 continuous weeks
- Internships may be paid or unpaid
RBS Co-op for Credit Program (6 Credits)
- Co-Op Requirement:
- Minimum of 30 hours/week with a total of at least 510 hours
- Duration: Minimum of 17 continuous weeks
- All eligible co-op positions must be paid
RBS 1-E Credit Program: (The RBS 1 E-credit internship does not award degree credit. The 1 E-credit will not count toward graduation.)
- Internship/ Co-Op Requirement:
- Minimum of at least 15 hours a week
- Duration: Minimum of 6 weeks
- Students applying for the 1 e-credit must have at least a 2.5 GPA
- Students must find and apply for the internship on their own and the organization offering the internship must require that the student be registered as a condition for the internship.
- The cost for the 1 E-credit is folded into your full-time registration and is part of your full-time tuition for the fall or spring semester. This does not apply to students seeking CPT in Winter or Summer Session.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS IN F-1/J-1 STATUS:
- You MUST receive additional employment authorization from Rutgers Global-International Student and Scholar Services before beginning a paid or unpaid opportunity.

ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS BY MAJOR:
ACCOUNTING, BAIT, FINANCE, LEADERSHIP & MANAGEMENT MAJORS
General Elective Eligibility Requirements:
- Major: Accounting, BAIT, Finance, Leadership & Management
- Minimum total completed credits: 30 credits
- Minimum GPA: 2.75
- Related Introductory Course: Students need to have completed the intro course of the related Internship or Co-op (and passed with a grade of at least a “C”) before they can be registered for the credits related to that internship or Co-op:
- Accounting Internship or Co-Op: Intro to Financial Accounting (33:010:272)
- BAIT Internship or Co-Op (any 1 of these 4 classes): Statistical Methods in Business (33:136:385), Management Information Systems (33:136:370), Operations Management (33:136:386) or Regression Methods (01:960:463)
- Finance Internship or Co-Op: Intro to Financial Management (33:390:300) or Financial Management for Finance Majors (33:390:310)
- Leadership and Management Internship or Co-Op: Intro to Management (33:620:301)
- Departmental Approval: Must be approved through the RBS Internship for Credit Program Application in CareerKnight with application status as “complete”.
Credit Type and Course Registration:
- Accounting, BAIT, Finance and Leadership/Management majors are eligible to apply and earn general elective credits if their respective internships or co-ops meet the required guidelines and students successfully complete the associated class along with the internship/co-op.
- Please note: Supply Chain and Marketing students may apply for general elective credit if their internship/co-op aligns more with a different area of business than their major.
- General Elective credits do NOT substitute for any classes; they only add to the total number of completed credits once a student successfully completes the internship or co-op, along with an associated class that is taken on Canvas. **Speak withacademic advisingabout any credits or course inquiries. **
- Departmental Approval: Must be approved through the RBS Internship for Credit Program Application in CareerKnight with application status as “complete”.
- Course grade Pass/Fail based on:
- Timely submission of reports
- Employer evaluation
- Completion of Canvas coursework
- Course Payment: You pay for the course as you would with any other academic course. If you are a full-time student, the course is covered under full-time tuition. MARKETING MAJORS
Eligibility Requirements:
- Major: Marketing
- Minimum total completed credits: 30 credits
- Minimum GPA:3.0
- Related Introductory Course: Must have completed and passed with at least a “C” (see above)
- Departmental approval: Must be approved through the RBS Internship for Credit Program Application in CareerKnight with application status as “complete”.
Credit Type and Course Registration:
- The Marketing Department offers major elective credits for Marketing majors if their respective internships or co-ops meet the required guidelines and students successfully complete the associated class along with the internship/co-op.
- Grading: Marketing majors whose internships/co-ops have been approved for credit by their academic department will receive a letter grade upon successful completion of their position and the associated class on Canvas.
- If approved for a Marketing internship: You will be registered by the marketing academic approver for the below course.
- 33:630:490 (Marketing Internship)
- If approved for a Marketing Co-op: You will be registered by the marketing academic approver for both of the below courses.
- 33:630:491 (Marketing Co-op) — major elective credit
- 33:011:482 (Special Topics in Administrative Studies) — general elective credit
- Course Payment: You pay for the course as you would with any other academic course. If you are a full-time student, the course is covered under full-time tuition. However, in the summer, you must pay for the course separately through Summer Session. Please visit the Rutgers-New Brunswick Summer Session for current tuition and fees.
Additional Information for Marketing Majors:
- Only one Marketing internship/co-op can count toward major elective credit for approved positions
- Additional internships/co-ops may qualify for general elective credit
- The RBS Internship and Co-Op for Credit Program is the only Rutgers University Internship/Co-op Program offering major elective credit for Marketing majors.
SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT MAJORS
Eligibility Requirements:
- Major: Supply Chain Management
- Minimum total credits: 60 credits completed OR enrollment in the Road to Supply Chain Leadership Program
- Must have completed and passed Intro to SCM (33:799:301) with at least a "C" OR completed the SCM Bootcamp
- No minimum GPA required for major credit (only for general elective)
Credit Type and Course Registration:
- The RBS Internship for Credit Program is the only program offering major required credit for SCM majors for approved positions if their respective internships or co-ops meet the required guidelines and students successfully complete the associated class along with the internship/co-op.
- If approved for a Supply Chain Management internship: You will be registered by the Supply Chain Management department academic approver for the Supply Chain Internship course for major required credit.
- Grading: Supply Chain Management majors whose internships/co-ops have been approved for credit by their academic department will receive a letter grade upon successful completion of their position and the associated class on Canvas.
- If approved for a Supply Chain Management Co-Op: You will be registered by the Supply Chain Management department academic approver for the below courses:
- 33:799:421 (SCM Co-op) — major required credit
- 33:011:482 (Special Topics in Administrative Studies) — general elective credit
- COURSE PAYMENT: You pay for the course as you would with any other academic course. If you are a full-time student, the course is covered under full-time tuition. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR SUPPLY CHAIN MANAGEMENT MAJORS:
- SCM majors can only take one experiential learning course for major required credit from the following:
- Industry Client Projects
- Internship in Supply Chain Management
- Co-op in Supply Chain Management
- Additional internships/co-ops may qualify for general elective credit
- The RBS Internship and Co-Op for Credit Program is the only Rutgers University Internship/Co-op Program offering major required credit for Supply Chain Management majors.
APPLICATION PROCESS & FINAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion and submission of the application is the responsibility of the student applicant. As part of the application process students must provide a detailed outline (requiring measurable and verifiable examples) of what is to be learned from the work experience as well as the identification of how the agreed upon outcomes of the learning experience will and can be verified. In addition, students will need to upload a copy of the hiring company’s offer letter on official company letterhead as well as a detailed job description which we will have the employer confirm.
- The student must obtain from the prospective employer a well-defined and agreed upon outline (with measurable and verifiable examples) of all duties and job assignments the student is expected to perform during an internship or Co-op program.

- Application must include all 6 required documents:
- Offer letter (on company letterhead)
- Job description (detailed)

- Final grades for an internship and/or co-op program are the result of the student's written reports and the student’s performance appraisal provided by the employer at the conclusion of the program. All student written reports will be submitted to the specific associated class via Canvas. Visit the RBS OCM website and Canvas for report requirements and deadlines.

What are the requirements to get credit for an internship or co-op through Rutgers Business School-New Brunswick?
Internship Guidelines (Spring, Summer or Fall Timeframe)
- RBS Undergraduate students majoring in Accounting, BAIT, Finance, Leadership and Management and Marketing need to have completed at least 30 total credits.
- RBS Undergraduate Supply Chain Management majors must have completed 60 total credits OR be enrolled in the Road to Supply Chain Leadership program
- Completion of at least 12 Rutgers credits prior to starting an internship
- Completion of the introductory level course in your major with a grade of “C’ or higher OR the Road to Supply Chain Leadership Bootcamp for Supply Chain Majors
- Accounting, BAIT, Finance, and Leadership/Management: 2.75 or higher GPA required
- Marketing: 3.0 or higher GPA required
- Supply Chain Management: No GPA requirement
- Internship Duration: Must work at least 15-20 hours per week and a total of at least 180 hours over the internship period and a minimum duration of at least 8 continuous weeks. Three (3) credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the internship.
- Co-op Duration: Must work at least 30 hours a week, totaling at least 510 hours for a minimum of at least 17 continuous weeks to complete the program and earn six (6) credits.
- Students can only apply and register for an internship during the semester that they will be working. That is, a student who applies and registers for the fall must work in the fall; applies and registers for the spring must work in the spring; applies and registers for the summer, must work in the summer. Please note that there are no summer co-op sessions; only spring and fall. IMPORTANT: There are no retroactive credits given after the role is completed.
- 1 E-Credit Duration: Must work at least 15 hours a weekfor a minimum of at least6 weeks.
- Students who are gainfully employed either on a full or part-time basis may not consider their employment for either an internship or co-op position.
- Each internship or co-op for which you are seeking to get credit MUST be with a different employer and in a different semester
How can I apply?
- Please do not submit your application for review until we open the application as there may be changes we need to make in the application and submitting your application before may cause issues. Submitting your application before the official open date will result in your application being deleted.
- For Summer 2025 RBS-New Brunswick Internship/Co-op for Credit Applications, please click HERE to access CareerKnight Single Sign On Login and select “Experiential Learning” on the left navigation toolbar; then click on “Add New Experience” to open the application request for credit. PLEASE make sure to follow all directions and include all required attachments!!
Applications must be submitted by the appropriate deadline (see the deadline due dates below).
- Once the student completes the electronic application, it will be reviewed to ensure that all required attachments are included. The academic department will make final determinations on whether or not the internship or co-op is approved for credit. IMPORTANT: THERE ARE NO RETROACTIVE CREDITS GIVEN ONCE THE ROLE IS COMPLETED.
What are the deadlines to apply?

The Employer Outline of Work Activities (EOWA), Job Description, Offer Letter, Student Learning Objectives (SLO), and Transcript are reviewed to determine if the internship/co-op is eligible to receive academic credit. Students that submit documents that lack detail will be rejected for the internship/co-op for-credit program until they submit complete documents.
Do I have to earn credit for my internship or Co-op?
No, earning academic credit is optional. However, some companies/organizations may require students to earn academic credit for participation in their internship or co-op.
Is there a limit to the number of total credits one is allowed to get for multiple internships or co-ops?
Students are eligible to pursue up to 9 general elective credits for internships and co-ops approved by RBS-New Brunswick. Please note that students are only able to get credit once with the same employer in the same position. In addition, students can only get credit for 1 role in the same semester.
How do I pay for the course?
You pay for the course as you would with any other academic course. If you are a full-time student, the course is covered under full-time tuition.
However, in the summer, you must pay for the course separately through Summer Session. Please visit the Rutgers-New Brunswick Summer Session for current tuition and fees.
What are the class assignments?
Monthly and final reports, as well as a supervisor’s final student evaluation, are required.
Specific instructions will be provided on Canvas by the course instructor.
I am an international student, am I eligible to apply for an internship or Co-Op?
International students must receive additional employment authorization from Rutgers Global before beginning any paid or unpaid internship/co-op.

Which positions do NOT qualify for internship/co-op for credit?
*The following are not recognized as internships/co-ops:
- Volunteer positions.
- Positions involving payment for participation as a research subject
- Positions performed in private homes, including but not limited to childcare, gardening, housekeeping, and respite care
- Camp counselor positions
- Multi-level marketing opportunities
- Positions that require any investment by the student, for instance, having to purchase equipment or products in order to earn a wage or pay for necessary training
- Ongoing part-time or full-time jobs that do not relate to the student’s career/academic goals
- Positions in organizations that have been established for less than six months
- Positions in organizations that have less than 3 employees
- Positions that are supervised by other interns or peers rather than a full-time employee
- Unpaid positions that require a schedule of 25 or more hours a week
- Positions where family members are supervisors as that is a conflict of interest
- Email/organization whose contacts do not have an email with the company domain
- Rutgers CES, CDC, and OCM will not accept positions related to the use or distribution of recreational or medical marijuana. As the use of marijuana is illegal at the federal level and Rutgers receives federal funds, we must comply with federal law.
