This application is for the Rutgers Business School (RBS) on the Newark campus and to be used by RBS-Newark undergraduate students who meet the following prior to the start of the internship/co-op:

 

  • Students must receive an internship/co-op offer before applying for an internship/co-op course.
  • The minimum cumulative GPA requirement to be considered for the internship/co-op course is 2.75. All majors (except for Supply Chain Management) need to meet this minimum requirement to be able to earn credit for an internship/co-op.
  • Registration for an internship must occur during the semester that he/she starts working. The total number of working hours must be completed within that semester.
  • Internship/co-op must be in a field related to the student’s primary or secondary major or in general business.
  • Existing full-time or part-time employment cannot be used (ONLY acceptable for Supply Chain Students).
  • Students can only register for a TOTAL of 16 credits in the semester that they will receive internship/co-op credit. This includes the number of credits registered for the internship or co-op. NO EXCEPTIONS. Students may enroll in up to 14 credits in the summer semester.
  • Financial Obligations Note: Please be advised that Fall and Spring internships/co-ops are part of your fall or spring tuition if you are a full-time student. Tuition must be paid on a per-credit basis if you are a part-time student or enrolling in the summer internship course.
  • The maximum number of credits a student can earn through this program is 9 credits, including co-op and internship.
  • Students will earn 3 credits towards a major elective credit for an internship. Students will earn 6 credits for a co-op, with 3 towards a major elective and 3 toward a general elective.
  • All students must submit their application by the stated deadline for that semester. There are no exceptions to late applications.
  • Students are enrolled in an online course with multiple assignments. A letter grade is earned at the end of the course that will count towards the student’s GPA.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Acceptance of an internship/co-op offer from a credible company.
  • Currently enrolled, matriculating RBS-Newark (RBS minors are not eligible).
  • Completed at least 24 college credits (transfer credits count) with 12 at RBS.
  • Students must have already completed the Intro course to their major with a “C” or better.
    • Accounting 010:203 & 204, MIS 623:220, Finance 390:329, Marketing 630:301, Management 620:301, Supply Chain, 799:301
  • Must be in good academic standing for the semester of registration.
  • F1/JI students must check with the Office of International Student Scholars to verify their eligibility and submit the correct forms with their contract.

International Students F1/ JI Internship Policies

All policies and eligibility requirements stated above apply to F1/J1 students. In addition to those policies, please see additional procedures/policies below for students who fit the F1/J1 criteria.

  • Review the Office of International Student Scholars website and meet with an OISS Adviser to see if you are eligible.
  • In addition to the Student Learning Contract (C-1), Employer Learning Contract (C-2), Job Description, and Offer Letter, you must submit the required CPT Forms with your internship/co-op application. Required CPT forms are:
  • Once all documents are submitted to the Office of Career Management, your application will be reviewed.
  • Students are notified they are approved and instructed on how to register. Once the student is registered, the Office of Career Management will complete the CPT Application Form and email the entire internship application back to the student.
  • The students must then take/email the document to OISS to process CPT.
  • CPT is required for PAID and UNPAID Internships.
  • International students may NOT start working until OISS approves their CPT.

Registration Criteria

Students MUST complete the following number of working hours to receive the corresponding number of credits:

  • Major elective credit is received during the first 3 credits earned through experiential learning. Any additional credits earned through a co-op or second internship count towards general credits.
  • Internship (3 credit) options are offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
  • Co-op (6 credit) options are only offered in the Fall and Spring semesters and not the Summer semester. 
  • No courses are offered during the Winter semester.
  • Students that start their Co-op in June- Dec will register for the upcoming fall semester. Co-ops from Jan-June will apply for the Spring semester.
  • Internships/co-ops are not considered on a rolling basis. All students must meet the deadline established for the semester in which they are applying.

Application Instructions

  1. Student receives an internship or co-op offer and accepts the offer from the company.
  2. Student completes the Experiential Learning Application in CareerKnight and uploads:
    1.  Job description
    2. Offer letter with work hours and start/stop dates
    3. If the internship/coop is unpaid, also upload the signed Employer Acknowledgement of FSLA 
  3. Internship/Co-op application will be reviewed by OCM.
  4. Student will then receive notice from CareerKnight with application status. Status can include: 
    1. Deny - application does not meet requirements/criteria
    2. Approve (a separate email will be sent with SPN number for course registration)
    3. Request Additional Info (typically additional documentation is needed before a final decision can be made)

What is an Internship?

What is a Co-Op?

Co-Op or Cooperative Education is a structured method of integrating classroom learning with practical work experience related to your career goals. A Co-Op is longer in duration.

What are the requirements to get credit for an internship or co-op?

Internship Guidelines (Spring, Summer or Fall Timeframe)

  • Completion of at least 24 credits towards your degree OR declared major with junior status
  • Completion of at least 12 Rutgers credits prior to starting an internship
  • Completion of the introductory level course in your major with a grade of “C’ or higher
  • GPA: 2.75 or higher
  • At least 15 hours per week and a total of at least 130 hours over the internship period
  • Minimum duration of at least 8 continuous weeks
  • Three (3) credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the internship. These credits will be used to meet RBS major elective requirements.
  • If you are a Supply Chain Management major the first 3 internship credits you earn will count toward a Supply Chain core requirement.
  • Students can only register for an internship during the semester that they will be working. That is, a student who registers in the fall must work in the fall; register in the spring and work in the spring; and register in the summer and work in the summer
  • Students who are gainfully employed either on a full or part time basis may not consider their employment for either an internship or co-op position. (The only students that may apply for credit with an existing full-time position are Supply Chain students.)
  • Each internship for which you are seeking to get credit MUST be with a different employer and in a different semester

Co-Op Guidelines - Spring (January-June Timeframe) Fall (July-December Timeframe)

  • Completion of at least 60 credits towards your degree OR declared major with junior status
  • Completion of at least 12 Rutgers credits prior to starting a co-op position
  • GPA: 2.75 or higher
  • Minimum of 30 hours per week and at least 510 total hours over the co-op period
  • Minimum duration of at least 17 continuous weeks
  • Students can only register for co-op during the session that they will be working. Spring co-ops typically occur during the January-June timeframe; Fall co-ops typically occur during the July-December timeframe
  • Six (6) credits will be awarded upon successful completion of the co-op and associated class. Three (3) of these credits will count toward a major elective credit and the remaining 3 will count toward a general elective. (Supply Chain Majors would earn 3 credits towards SCM core requirement and the other 3 would count towards a supply chain major elective.
  • Students who are gainfully employed either on a full or part-time basis may not consider their employment for either an internship or co-op position. (The only students that may apply for credit with an existing full-time position are Supply Chain students.)

  • PLEASE NOTE: Students will only earn 3 credits towards a major elective one time through the internship/co-op for credit class. Students who apply to receive credit for an additional semester are eligible for general credit.

How can I apply?

  • For Summer 2024 RBS-Newark Internship/Co-op for Credit Applications, please click HEREto access CareerKnight Single Sign On Login and select “Experiential Learning” on the left navigation toolbar; then click on “Add New Experience” to open the application request for credit. PLEASE make sure to follow all directions and include all required attachments!!
  • Applications must be submitted by the appropriate deadline of June 24, 2024  
  • Once you complete the electronic application, it will be reviewed to ensure that all required attachments are included. The OCM will make final determinations on whether or not the internship or co-op is approved for credit. IMPORTANT: THERE ARE NO RETROACTIVE CREDITS GIVEN ONCE THE ROLE IS COMPLETED.

What are the deadlines to apply?

Do I have to earn credit for my internship or Co-op?

No, earning academic credit is optional. However, some companies/organizations may require students to earn academic credit for participation in their internship or co-op.

Is there a limit on the number of total credits one is allowed to get for multiple internships or co-ops?

Students are eligible to pursue up to 9 general elective credits for internships and co-ops approved by RBS-Newark. Please note that students are only able to get credit once with the same employer in the same position.

How do I pay for the course?

You pay for the course as you would with any other academic course. If you are a full-time student, the course is covered under full-time tuition.

However, in the summer, you must pay for the course separately through Summer Session. Please visit the Rutgers Newark Summer Session website for current tuition and fees.

What are the class assignments?

Monthly and final reports are required. In addition, the student must write a thank you letter, and the student’s supervisor must complete a performance evaluation, and a timesheet matrix to confirm the student's hours worked. Specific instructions will be provided on Canvas by the course instructor.

I am an international student, am I eligible to apply for an internship or Co-Op?

International students must receive additional employment authorization from Rutgers Newark Office of International Student and Scholar Services (OISS) before beginning any paid or unpaid internship/co-op. Please visit their website on Curricular Practical Training for more details on working off-campus and contact oiss@newark.rutgers.edu if you have any questions. Please attach all portions of the CPT application to your internship/co-op for credit application in BusinessKnight.

Which positions do NOT qualify for internship/co-op for credit?

*The following are not recognized as internships/co-ops:

  • Volunteer positions.
  • Positions involving payment for participation as a research subject
  • Positions performed in private homes, including but not limited to childcare, gardening, housekeeping, and respite care
  • Camp counselor positions
  • Multi-level marketing opportunities
  • Positions that require any investment by the student, for instance, having to purchase equipment or products in order to earn a wage or pay for necessary training
  • Ongoing part-time or full-time jobs that do not relate to the student’s career goals
  • Positions in organizations that have been established for less than six months
  • Positions that are supervised by other interns or peers rather than a full-time employee
  • Unpaid positions that require a schedule of 30+ hours a week for at least 20 weeks
  • Positions where family members are supervisors as that is a conflict of interest
  • Email/organization contact must have an email with the company domain
